| Personal History | Sam was born in Kansas City Missouri, on Earth's North American continent. It had been almost a hundred years since the Vulcan's had arrived and changed everything. While in the early part of grade school he already had the models, the charts, everything. He was starting the 3rd grade when Captain Archer and his crew returned triumphant from saving the planet from the Xindi. The euphoria was short lived when a year later the Earth-Romulan war broke out, humanities first interstellar war. Following the war, during Sam's last part of Middle School, the Federation was founded. Like most everyone else on the planet Sam and his family watched the broadcast of the signing of the charter and listened to Archer's speech. It was then and all during high school that Sam told everyone that he was going to be in Starfleet and Captain a starship of his own. Pouring himself into his studies he found he and a knack for science and dove in head first learning all he could. He had a singular focus and even with that focus he maintained a close circle of friends, was on his schools track team, cultivated relationships with local, regional, and continental leadership. By the time he graduated he was in the best shape of his life, rock solid academics, and had a stack of letters of recommendation. When the response to his application came in everyone was certain it was a slam dunk, but when prepared to read the reply aloud to his friends and family, his shoulders dropped. His mom and girl friend teared up as they both covered their mouths with their hand. Looking up from the tablet he swallowed hard. “I'm In!” What followed was a mix of hugs and hits for pranking everyone. His Academy years seemed to fly by. The idea of exploration was captivating and he had definitely been bitten by that bug. The resources at the Academy opened up new areas of science that both intrigued and challenged him. Upon graduating his first assignment was initially disappointing. He had hoped to get an assignment to a starship but instead he was being sent to a Star base. The trip to Star Base 12 was great as he hung out with several of his fellow graduates during the trip. By the time he arrived he realized the SB12 was a short trip to several worlds, key among them being Risa. Sam quickly forgot his initial disappointment. His years on SB12 had become an eye opening experiences for a young officer, having been assigned to several survey missions, setting foot on multiple planets or their moons, encountering and working with multiple species, and making several trips to Risa. After picking up a promotion to Lieutenant JG, Sam finally got his first starship assignment aboard the Daedalus Class, USS Lovell. Life aboard a starship was definitely different to that on a station, but he adjusted quickly enough. Sam's assignment started off great getting his first taste of exploration. Unfortunately he found out that the unknown had a darker side. Not long into this assignment, the Lovell had been ambushed, and nearly destroyed by surprise attack. During the attack the Lovell was boarded and severely damaged by Orion Raiders. The fighting was fierce both between the ships but went on deck by deck to clear the ship. Between ship to ship casualties and the boarding parties, the raiders managed to kill nearly a quarter of the crew, including Sam's department head. In recognition for his actions, Sam was promoted to full Lieutenant. Due to the level of damage, it took the Lovell 2½ months of limping back towards home before they were discovered and towed back to a Star base. Most of the Lovell's crew was reassigned, Sam included. This time Sam was in charge. The science department on an NX Class ship wasn't huge by any means but they quickly became a close knit group. The Captain of the Freedom, Captain Jennings, took note of how well Sam interacted with the other senior officers as well as the rest of the crew. After two years on the Freedom. Captain Jenning called Sam to his ready room and asked him if he had ever considered command. For the next four year the Captain and the XO took Sam under their wing preparing him for the day he was ready. During those years Sam got tried and test in ways he hadn't thought of both in training and for real. In 2180, while the Captain and XO where on the surface the Freedom was rocked by a catastrophic malfunction. The only way to save the ship was for Sam to order someone, a friend, to their death. When the Captain and XO returned, they found Sam alone in his friends quarters. Jennings took a seat opposite him. “You made a call that most Captain's, myself included, haven't had to make. I know you've love friends before, but this...this is different. Just remember, he died a hero and together you both saved not just the ship but the crew as well.” Sam didn't know it but Captain Jennings had but his name in to Starfleet Command, recommending his for consideration as XO. A year latter he was wearing a new pip as he sat in a shuttle pod, on his way to the USS Eventide and his next adventure. |
