Outward Trajectory

Overview

The galaxy was a very large place, and even after centuries of exploration, the Federation had learned how little of it could be said to be understood. Beyond familiar space, beyond the borders drawn on star charts and the routes worn into navigational databases, lay phenomena that challenged the assumptions upon which modern science had been built.

One such phenomenon was an artificial signal detected across the quadrant. Its apparent origin lay near the Galactic Barrier, in a region of space where conventional observation offered few satisfactory answers. The signal behaved in ways that resisted straightforward explanation, and its strength increased considerably when it encountered the Luujak Nebula, deep within Zakdorn space.

Starfleet dispatched USS Eventide, a new Bonaventure-class explorer, to investigate. She was ordered to rendezvous with USS Iphigenia and the Vulcan science vessel Ni'Paar, both of which had already spent several days studying the phenomenon. Their early findings suggested that the nebula presented hazards to visiting vessels even as it strengthened the mysterious transmission.

The mission began as an investigation into an unusual astronomical and communications phenomenon.
